CoRe at the Annual Meeting of American Anthropological Association 2018

28.11.2018

Peter Schweitzer, Olga Povoroznyuk in collaboration with Stephanie MacCallum convened the panel “Revisiting railroads: Sociality, Mobility and Infrastructure” on November 18, 2018 at the Annual Meeting of American Anthropological Association in San Jose, California.

Following the analogous panel at EASA conference in Stockholm in August 2018, the papers in this panel focused on social, affective and material life of railroads as (post)modern projects engendering new forms of (im)mobility, remoteness, (dis)connection and social engineering. Here you can find the program of the panel.

Peter Schweitzer’s presentation at the panel scrutinizing historical and ethnographic examples from Alaska and Northern Russia, explored the importance of anthropological studies of railroads.

Olga Povoroznyuk’s paper drawing on ethnographic study of the reconstruction of Baikal-Amur Mainline, addressed affective and material continuities between the socialist construction project and the postsocialist modernization of the BAM infrastructure.
